The ideal time for a Nile cruise is between October and April when temperatures are pleasant (70-85°F/21-30°C during the day). December and January are peak season with the most comfortable weather. Summer months (June-August) can be extremely hot (95-105°F/35-40°C), but offer lower prices and fewer crowds. The Nile River cruise season operates year-round, so your choice depends on your heat tolerance and budget preferences.
The main difference is direction and pacing. A 3-night cruise typically sails from Aswan to Luxor, while a 4-night cruise goes from Luxor to Aswan. The 4-night option offers a more relaxed pace with additional time at key sites and sometimes includes extra stops. If you’re short on time, the 3-night cruise covers all major temples but with a slightly more condensed schedule. Both directions visit the same major attractions including Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae Temple.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits (out of respect for local customs). Essential items include: comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, light jacket or sweater for evenings (especially in winter months), swimwear for the pool, camera, adapter plugs (Egypt uses Type C and F plugs), basic medications, and hand sanitizer. Most cruises have a Galabeya Party night where traditional Egyptian dress is encouraged—these can be purchased inexpensively in Egypt if you’d like to participate.
Most Nile cruises operate on a full board basis, meaning all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are included in the price. Standard shore excursions to major temples and sites along the Nile are typically included, along with an English-speaking Egyptologist guide. However, optional excursions like Abu Simbel, hot air balloon rides over Luxor, or sound and light shows usually cost extra.
